Why Should Home Schools Keep Records?

The best answer:

To benefit your students in the future.

More Specific Reasons

Here are a few important reasons home schools should keep academic records and attendance records for their students:

High School Transcripts Needed by Colleges and Universities

If your child/student may want to proceed to college or university, a transcript will almost certainly be required as part of the application process. Detailed academic records as are maintained in Home School Data Bank are used to create transcripts.

For Your Child's/Student's Peace of Mind

Over time memory fades. Someday your child/student may want to look back and see a history of which classes they took, when the classes were taken, what were the supporting academic materials, and how they performed.

Regardless of their reasons, it may be helpful for your child/student to have a complete record that is easily accessible.

Proof of Education

Keeping detailed records can serve as evidence that your child is receiving a proper education. This is particularly important if the legality of your homeschooling is ever questioned by authorities.

For better or for worse this topic may come up in legal custody disputes. It will be best to have a detailed record of academic records in these unfortunate situations.

If your student may transfer back to a public or private school, it will be helpful to show the school a complete record of the educational accomplishments your student achieved when home schooled.

For Your Own Planning Purposes

Regularly updating academic records helps you track your child's/student's progress over time, identify areas where they might need additional help, and adjust your teaching strategies accordingly.
